Automatic classification of digital communication signal modulations
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel UniversityAutomatic modulation classification detects the modulation type of received communication signals. It has important applications in military scenarios to facilitate jamming, intelligence, surveillance, and threat analysis. The renewed interest from civilian scenes has been fuelled by the development of intelligent communications systems such as cognitive radio and software defined radio. More specifically, it is complementary to adaptive modulation and coding where a modulation can be deployed from a set of candidates according to the channel condition and system specification for improved spectrum efficiency and link reliability. In this research, we started by improving some existing methods for higher classification accuracy but lower complexity. Machine learning techniques such as k-nearest neighbour and support vector machine have been adopted for simplified decision making using known features. Logistic regression, genetic algorithm and genetic programming have been incorporated for improved classification performance through feature selection and combination. We have also developed a new distribution test based classifier which is tailored for modulation classification
with the inspiration from Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. The proposed classifier is shown to have improved accuracy and robustness over the standard distribution test. For blind classification in imperfect channels, we developed the combination of minimum distance centroid estimator and non-parametric likelihood function for blind modulation classification without the prior knowledge on channel noise. The centroid estimator provides joint estimation of channel gain and carrier phase o set where both can be compensated in the following nonparametric likelihood function. The non-parametric likelihood function, in the meantime, provide likelihood evaluation without a specifically assumed noise model. The combination has shown to have higher robustness when different noise types are considered. To push modulation classification techniques into a more timely setting, we also developed the principle for blind classification in MIMO systems. The classification is achieved through expectation maximization channel estimation and likelihood based classification. Early results have
shown bright prospect for the method while more work is needed to further optimize the method and to provide a more thorough validation.School of Engineering and Design Brunel University London, the Faculty of Engineering University of Liverpool, and the University of Liverpool Graduate Association (Hong Kong)
Water Vapor Near-UV Absorption: Laboratory Spectrum, Field Evidence, and Atmospheric Impacts
Absorption of solar radiation by water vapor in the near-UV region is a poorly-understood but important issue in atmospheric science. To better understand water vapor near-UV absorption, we constructed a cavity ring-down spectrometer with bandwidth of 5 cm-1 (~0.05 nm) and obtained water vapor absorption cross-sections at 1 nm increments in the 290-350 nm region. Water vapor displays structured absorption over this range with maximum and minimum cross-sections of 8.4Ă—10-25 and 1.6Ă—10-25 cm2/molecule. Major water vapor absorption bands were observed at 293-295, 307-313, 319, 321-322, and 325 nm, with cross-section values higher than 4.0Ă—10-25 cm2/molecule. To obtain further insight into major water vapor absorption bands, we measured water vapor absorption cross-sections at 0.05 nm intervals in the 292-296, 306-314, and 317-326 nm region. Field UV residual spectra not only exhibited increased attenuation at higher atmospheric water vapor loadings but also showed structures suggested by the laboratory water vapor absorption spectrum. Spaceborne UV radiance spectra have spectral structures resembling the differential cross-section spectrum constructed from the laboratory wavelength-dependent water vapor absorption cross-sections presented here. Incorporating water vapor absorption cross-section data into a radiative transfer model yielded an estimated energy budget of 0.26 W/m2 for the standard U.S. atmosphere and 0.76 W/m2 for the tropics. This shows that water vapor near-UV absorption is an important contributor for climate simulation and ozone retrievals
Automatic modulation classification: principles, algorithms and applications
Automatic Modulation Classification (AMC) has been a key technology in many military, security, and civilian telecommunication applications for decades. In military and security applications, modulation often serves as another level of encryption; in modern civilian applications, multiple modulation types can be employed by a signal transmitter to control the data rate and link reliability. This book offers comprehensive documentation of AMC models, algorithms and implementations for successful modulation recognition. It provides an invaluable theoretical and numerical comparison of AMC alg
Diverse partner selection with brood recombination in genetic programming
The ultimate goal of learning algorithms is to find the best solution from a search space without testing each and every solution available in the search space. During the evolution process new solutions (children) are produced from existing solutions (parents), where new solutions are expected to be better than existing solutions. This paper presents a new parent selection method for the crossover operation in genetic programming. The idea is to promote crossover between two behaviourally (phenotype) diverse parents such that the probability of children being better than their parents increases. The relative phenotype strengths and weaknesses of pairs of parents are exploited to find out if their crossover is beneficial or not (diverse partner selection (DPS)). Based on the probable improvement in children compared to their parents, crossover is either allowed or disallowed. The parents qualifying for crossover through this process are expected to produce much better children and are allowed to produce more children than normal parents through brood recombination (BR). BR helps to explore the search space around diverse parents much more efficiently. Experimental results from different benchmarking problems demonstrate that the proposed method (DPS with BR) improves the performance of genetic programming significantly.peerReviewe
Association between the ABCC11 gene polymorphism and the expression of apolipoprotein D by the apocrine glands in axillary osmidrosis.
It has been suggested that the adenosine triphosphate‑binding cassette sub‑family C member 11 (ABCC11) gene polymorphism and apolipoprotein D (ApoD), an odor precursor carrier, may be important in the formation of axillary odor. To date, few studies have examined the potential correlation between these two factors. The present study aimed to investigate the association between a 538 G>A single‑nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) of the ABCC11 gene and the mRNA expression levels of ApoD in the apocrine gland of patients with osmidrosis. The 538 G>A polymorphism genotypes of 33 patients with a clinical diagnosis of osmidrosis were analyzed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and a base‑quenched probe method, and they were divided into two groups according to the results. The G allele functions as a dominant gene; therefore, patients with the GG or GA genotype were allocated to Group I (n=28) and patients with the AA genotype to Group II (n=5). The mRNA expression levels of ApoD in the apocrine glands were determined by reverse transcription‑PCR. The results indicated that the mRNA expression levels of ApoD were significantly higher in the apocrine glands of patients in Group I compared with those in Group II (PA allele was associated with a downregulation of the mRNA expression of ApoD in the apocrine glands, which may indicate a role for the ABCC11 gene in the mediation of osmidrosis by enhancing the transition of odor precursors via the ApoD pathway
Immune Landscape and an RBM38-Associated Immune Prognostic Model with Laboratory Verification in Malignant Melanoma
Background: Current studies have revealed that RNA-binding protein RBM38 is closely related to tumor development, while its role in malignant melanoma remains unclear. Therefore, this research aimed to investigate the function of RBM38 in melanoma and the prognosis of the disease. Methods: Functional experiments (CCK-8 assay, cell colony formation, transwell cell migration/invasion experiment, wound healing assay, nude mouse tumor formation, and immunohistochemical analysis) were applied to evaluate the role of RBM38 in malignant melanoma. Immune-associated differentially expressed genes (DEGs) on RBM38 related immune pathways were comprehensively analyzed based on RNA sequencing results. Results: We found that high expression of RBM38 promoted melanoma cell proliferation, invasion, and migration, and RBM38 was associated with immune infiltration. Then, a five-gene (A2M, NAMPT, LIF, EBI3, and ERAP1) model of RBM38-associated immune DEGs was constructed and validated. Our signature showed superior prognosis capacity compared with other melanoma prognostic signatures. Moreover, the risk score of our signature was connected with the infiltration of immune cells, immune-regulatory proteins, and immunophenoscore in melanoma. Conclusions: We constructed an immune prognosis model using RBM38-related immune DEGs that may help evaluate melanoma patient prognosis and immunotherapy modalities
Geometrical local image descriptors for palmprint recognition
International audienceA new palmprint recognition system is presented here. The method of extracting and evaluating textural feature vectors from palmprint images is tested on the PolyU database. Furthermore, this method is compared against other approaches described in the literature that are founded on binary pattern descriptors combined with spiral-feature extraction. This novel system of palm-print recognition was evaluated for its collision test performance, precision, recall , F-score and accuracy. The results indicate the method is sound and comparable to others already in use
